Avril Coleridge-Taylor was born (March 8, 1903) in London, daughter of the composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875 – 1912) and his wife, the musician, Jessie Walmisley, and was the sister of Hiawatha Coleridge-Taylor (1900 – 1980). Originally named Gwendolyn, she later adopted the name Avril and studied music at the Trinity College of Music, being taught composition by Gordon Jacob and Alec Rowley. Avril made her debut as a conductor at the Royal Albert Hall (1933), and later wrote the Ceremonial March to celebrate Ghana’s Independence (1957). Other works included Sussex Landscape (1936), chamber music, and over thirty-five songs all composed over a five decade period (1917 – 1971). These included, Goodbye Butterfly (1917), The Dreaming Water Lily (1923), O’ er all the hill-tops (1957) and, I can face it, Lord (1971). Avril Coleridge-Taylor died (Dec 21, 1998) aged ninety-five, at Seaford.
